A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Very interesting, thanks.
It makes sense, an out of control process locking the files, blocking access to them.

I'm opening a word document from my Onedrive folder on my local machine and it's opening in Word 365 in read-only mode. Why is this and why can't I open the document in Word 2010?

For those still having this issue, it seems like Office is trying to take over the syncing in order to make the fikes available online for usage with, and only with, Office online.
Right-click on OneDrive in the Notification Area (right side of the taskbar) and go to Settings.
Go to the "Office” tab and Uncheck "Use office 2016 to sync office files that I open."
It fixed it on my wife's computer. I hate Office with a passion so I've never had that issue.

I think Steve C might have hit the nail on the head.
I’ve found no solution. Changing the properties of all documents achieves nothing except maybe temporarily. My son has the same issue. It’s a quirk of OneDrive and MS Word, I suspect, and one that Microsoft aren’t bothered about.
I am searching for an answer to the same issue and coming across this forum i see that you say they were looking for a fix for it? but this was in 2015 and it is now 2018.... so im guessing theres no way to fix it??
