Autosave not working - no files are there

Why cant this damn program just SAVE AUTOMATICALLY!!  I wasted 1hr of work time. 

Why do you work for an hour and not click save? Who walks away from their computer and doesn't click save? Since I was about 8 yrs old I knew to save often. Nobody to blame but yourself. I'm sure you've got years of precious work and photos on your hard drive that you've been meaning to get around to backing up too.

It happened again.  I work on my spreadsheet for 1hr.  Take a 20 min nap and come back to it and work for 5 min then the damn thing crashes.  Open up excel and nothing recovered and nothing saved anywhere.  It opens the last version saved from yesterday.  This is useless!!  Why cant this damn program just SAVE AUTOMATICALLY!!  I wasted 1hr of work time.  I have to redo everything again.  its 2018 its time everything gets saved automatically.  Hard drive space is no longer an issue. SAVE SAVE SAVE.  OF COURSE WE WANT THINGS SAVED WHY ELSE WOULDN'T WE!!  This auto recover crap doesnt even work so just make this damn app to save woek all the time..  i shouldn't have to remember to save anymore.  When does anyone work on a spreadsheet and not want it saved??!!

Don't hold your breath waiting for a response from official MS. Very few MS staff read this forum.

I agree with what you said above. If you want developers and managers at MS to see your complaints use the Windows Feedback Hub to submit it:

There are real MS staff and developers who monitor all submissions to the UserVoice forums whether you submit them through the Feedback Hub, or by using the Feedback command built in to some MS applications, like Office 2016, or by using the appropriate link directly

NOTE: BEFORE entering your feedback, ESPECIALLY when you have crash problems or driver problems where you are willing to share configuration information from your system, click on the link to “go to diagnostic and usage data settings”. This takes you to the settings dialog for “Feedback & Diagnostics”.  This dialog allows you to specify “Basic” or “Full”. Personally I prefer basic most of the time. But when it is display or driver issues it would be a good idea to set it to “FULL”.

Note: make sure to click on “Problem” or “Suggestion” radio button at top of dialog. You can’t submit until one is selected.

Note: After you input the description you are asked to pick categories to put the submission in to.  Clicking on the drop downs is slow and confusing. Instead, click on the “Show category suggestions” hyperlink. It often provides reasonable pairs you can select from.

Note: there is a special check box for “problem with how text is displayed”

Note: When you look at existing feedbacks there is a “Share” button near the top left side of the dialog to get a link to the suggestion. That button is NOT present when creating a new feedback.  You have to submit it, then in the Feedback Hub home you have to click on “My Feedback” at the very top of the screen and select “All Categories” just below that.  Then you can click on your recently submitted suggestion. Now, you can see the “Share” button to get a link you can post back to the forum so other people can comment and vote on the suggestion.

In addition, when you post a suggestion / complaint to UserVoice, if you have reached there by being guided while asking a question in a forum, please post a link back to your suggestion in UserVoice in the original Question. That way other people who see your original question because they are looking for the same fix can easily find your suggestion, vote for it and add supporting comments.

The same thing has happened to me. But I had actually saved manually many times between "the last saved version" that excel had and the time it crashed.

I see two VERY SERIOUS problems:

1- You cannot have a program that crashes every second day. I have a new SurfacePro with the new Windows10 Pro. My laptop is less than one month old yet my old Mac (that is over 10 years old) is much more reliable. With this new system my office suite (mostly excel, word and powerpoint) crash relatively regularly. This should not be happening.

If I do not see any changes soon I will have to revert back to Mac. 

2- Your system should save the documents it says it saved. Whether you are using auto recover and especially if you are saving manually.

It seems that I am not the only one with this problem.

I was also very disappointed as I tried to contact support through the Microsoft website and this also crashed. I am denoting a pattern.

this has been broken forever. Microsuck will never fix because they don't care!
