I use a two monitor system and will have MS Excel 2013 running on both.  On one monitor I can select a range of numbers and the sum total will show in he status bar.  When I select a cell in the workbook on my other monitor the sum total disappears.  Is there a way to not have the sum total disappear?

In order for this to work you need 2 instances of Excel open.

So open your first workbook and then while holding the ALT key down right click on the taskbar icon and open another workbook. Continue to hold down the ALT key until you get a popup asking if you want another instance of Excel. Click yes and then open your second workbook. If you do not get the popup make sure your holding down the ALT key long enough.

We just switched to 2013 and I am crying the blues.  Has anyone found a fix for the status bar disappearing?  The earlier suggestion of creating another "instance" of Excel does not work.

I am going to download Open Office onto my computer so I can get some work done.

While late to the party, I have to agree with all the above comments, why would you add a "Feature" that probably took more work then without and makes using exel more painful and tedious.  While there might be workarounds there are very good reasons to not run multiple instances especially when you have split up the single instance into multiple windows instead of contained within one window.  Side note please look at google spreadsheets and take note of some of the nice convent cell equation and array features they contain.

I just have to say that this is not good enough. Taking away a feature then offering a work around that doesn't even work (I'm already running a multiple instances tweak to make it excel usable with multiple spreadsheets in the first place). I previously used this function multiple times a day. Now my only option is sum, quickly memorise the number, switch to the other spreadsheet, type it in before I forget it, then check I got it right. With all the distractions you get in your average office (and every other number in your head), this is a major pain and error prone.
