Horizontal scroll by mousewheel not working

I doubt that they will ever fix it.

Since Windows Vista the horizontal scroll has been a problem. I heavily use office and have had at least the last 5 versions. Office 2007, 2010 and 2013 have all suffered from this horizontal scrolling problem. Windows XP is the last time I remember horizontal scroll working correctly in Publisher. The side scrolling in Office in newer OS's after that have been intermittent. In Publisher 2013 on Windows 7 and 8 I can tap and scroll and it works 70% of the time but if I hold it to continue scrolling the horizontal bar moves but the screen does not. When I was using Windows Vista I had this problem with Logitech mice and thought they where the problem so I bought a MS mouse and still had the exact same problem. In all cases I installed the accompanied mouse software. Again this is the case on multiple machines and with Office 2007, 2010 and 2013 on Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. I really hope Microsoft will fix this problem.

Like others, this suggested cure did not work for me - I am using a new HP Z4000 wireless mouse on a new HP laptop with Windows 8.1 and Excel 2013. Out of frustration, I took my old Microsoft wireless mouse (MSK 1056) which also has a scroll and plugged the USB stick into my laptop with Excel open. Windows 8.1 recognized it as a new device and automatically installed the driver, which took about 15 seconds. The scroll feature on my old MS mouse worked in Excel! I had my new mouse still turned on with its USB stick still in, and so simply moved my hand from the old MS mouse to my new mouse, and the scroll worked on it as well. I unplugged the old MS mouse USB stick - my new mouse scroll continued to work and has continued to work ever since. I have no idea why this fixed it, but if you have a different mouse with a scroll (maybe it has to be an MS mouse???), give it a try.

In "Devices & Printers" the mouse shows up with the correct name and even picture. This leads me to believe the correct drivers are in fact installed.

The horizontal scroll by mousewheel does in fact work perfectly fine in Word, which further leads me to believe that this problem is in Excel, not in the driver.

I tried a few others as well:

Word: works

Excel: doesn't work

PowerPoint: doesn't work

Outlook: works

Visio: works

Visual Studio 2012: works (not in all panes, tho)

Explorer: doesn't work

Internet Explorer: works

Firefox: works

Photoshop CS5: doesn't work

Command prompt: works (genuinely surprised :P)

Notepad: works

Paint: doesn't work

The fact that it works in so many applications and doesn't work in some other, indicates that it is something that has to be implemented by a developer of that application, and it isn't something that "magically" works like vertical scrolling usually does.

For now, as far as Office 2013 is concerned, this problem exists only in Excel and PowerPoint (although getting PowerPoint to show a horizontal scrollbar is a challenge in itself). If this problem can be fixed in the Explorer as well, that would be awesome.

This is the same situation that I face - exactly.

Does not work in Excel or Powerpoint, works in Word though. Operating windows 7 64b and Office 2013, also had this problem in Office 2010.

Using Logitech G700S with Logitech Gaming Software v 8.52.15 - all drivers up to date as @ 4/4/2014

Not an isolated incident, have had this issue with many different mice. (Also Logitech Performance MX x multiple mice)

Somehow a few months ago on Office 2010 it started working for no apparent reason, now on a new machine and new job I've got the same problem

I can scroll left and right in excel and word (office 2013) by tilting the mouse wheel left or right.  I think in the control panel for the mouse it is called horizontal scrolling and you can set it there.  But no setting will allow power point 2013 to scroll horizontally
