Horizontal scroll by mousewheel not working

I have a Logitech M500 mouse. This mouse has a mechanical mousewheel (the "ticking" kind), which can also be clicked from the sides to horizontally scroll. The great thing as that this works almost everywhere... In my browser, in Notepad++, basically almost everywhere as far as the programs go that I use. Except for Excel 2013.

Possibly related, it also doesn't work in regular ol' Explorer file browser windows. Not a bother, because I use Total Commander. But the horizontal scroll thing does work in Internet Explorer 10, which seems odd to me (same company behind Explorer and Internet Explorer, after all).

When I got the mouse, I did not install any drivers myself. I just connected the mouse and let Windows looks for and install proper drivers completely automatically. And since it works perfectly in the browser and my code editor, I figured the horizontal scroll function was working properly.

Is there perhaps some kind of thing that I need to do to make Excel recognize a horizontal scoll from the scrollwheel, or have I perhaps stumbled upon a bug?

    After much searching I found the setting in the Logitech SetPoint software.  Here's a screenshot with numbered steps

    1. rt clk on the mouse u have then
    2. clk on "SetPoint Settings" and the SetPoint window should open
    3. clk on "Select Button 4."
    4. clk radio button "Other"
    5. Scroll through the "Select Task" list until u find "Left Scroll"

    repeat for "Select Button 5." but with "Right Scroll"

    This worked for all apps except Project Libre.  Not surprised as it uses the Java UI convention.

    It seems that for some reason, Microsoft is not interested in adding "horizontal scrolling" to Excel (preferably with Shift key altering scroll function). Microsoft doesn't like power users. More important are colourful backgrounds and arrays of millions of colours (the latter perfectly impede filtering) as they are more attractive for its marketing target, i.e. "normal users", which are in bigger number than power users. Horizontal scrolling is not required by normal users.

    And buying 2-wheel mouse is not possible as well. Even "if" – not every environment allows to utilize 2-wheel mice.

    We are trapped.

    It is just not a priority for Microsoft to fix this or it might be that fixing it breaks too many other things. Either way SOL. I have tired for hours to get this to work without any success. Maybe the next version will fix it (but I doubt it!)

    I have a Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Wireless Mouse which is advertised specifically for Windows 8.  I am running Windows 8.1 and Office 2013 since both are needed to take advantage of the touch screen.

    Office 2013 has a mouse mode and a touch mode.  Neither mode helps Power Point's lack of horizontal scrolling with a mouse that is suppose to be designed to support that.  (It works in either mode in Excel, Word and Outlook)

    Going back to Office 2010 isn't an option because of the lack of touch screen support.  I really expected this basic functionality to work with all Microsoft software and their own mouse.

    Please fix this....   IT IS AN OFFICE 2013 ISSUE !

    Hi,

    Since the drivers were automatically installed by Windows, it may not be the exact driver for the device.

    Is there a disc for the driver provided along with the device, If so you may update the driver and then check if this issue occurs.

    You may have to contact your computer manufacturer to update the drivers.

    As you say that this issue occurs with Excel application and Windows Explorer, are you able to use the horizontal scroll on other Office applications like Word, PowerPoint?
