Word 2013 is crashing when attempting to open OneDrive files

Lately, I've been attempting to open Word documents from my OneDrive account and as it attempts to open the document, Word (2013) itself crashes.

If I download the file from OneDrive and attempt to open it locally, things work just fine.

The machine I'm having issues with is my work computer which is running Windows 7 Pro x64 all the latest updates.

I have been bouncing back and forth between my home computer with this document, which is a Windows 8.1 x64 Update 1. Also running Office 2013. I have not attempted to open the document again from my home computer since this has started happening, however I will attempt this evening to see if I am also getting the problem there.

My problem is similar and OneDrive related.

I have two computers, a work desktop with Windows 7 and Office 2013 and a laptop with Windows 10 and Office 2013. Since updating the work computer to Office 2013, I had to sign in to my OneDrive account to even use OneNote from the suite (no app on 7). Since then, Word crashes every five minutes of use whether a file is opened from OneDrive, network folders, C folders, or flashdrive. I also do not have to be actually doing anything in Word for it to crash. I only have to have it open. It happen today with the Word splash screen open only and no file loaded. The problem does not occur on the Windows 10/Office 2013 computer.

This is a problem only in Word and only since connecting my OneDrive account to this computer. I need to be able to use OneNote. Why do I have to log in to OneDrive to use it? Is there a workaround on Windows 7/Office 2013 that doesn't involve moving the OneDrive folder to C, since this is a work computer? Is there a way to run OneNote 2013 without logging in to OneDrive?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thank you for that. What exactly happens this if this is true: "When you turn off the Use Office to work on files with other people at the same time setting, any changes that you and other people make to Office files in your OneDrive will no longer merge together automatically."

Does that mean that a shared file cannot be edited simultaneously--in other words, only one party can edit at a time, but all changes are saved. Or does it mean something else?

Where do you find that option [Use Office to work on files with other people at the same time] exactly?

    Windows 10 Only

    Turn off Office Upload

If you’re having trouble syncing Office files, the Office Upload cache system may be interfering with OneDrive sync. Try turning off the related setting in OneDrive settings.

    1. Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar. (You might need to click the Show hidden icons arrow next to the notification area to see the OneDriveicon.)
    2. Click Settings, and then clear the Use Office to work on files with other people at the same time check box.

IMPORTANT   When you turn off the Use Office to work on files with other people at the same time setting, any changes that you and other people make to Office files in your OneDrive will no longer merge together automatically.

While OneDrive is a convenient location to which you might upload documents so as to have another copy of them available, I would always work with documents on the local drive.
