With today's OneNote for Mac update in the App Store (version 15.7.1), we've changed the minimum system requirements for OneNote to take advantage of the latest and greatest capabilities in Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10). Yosemite (10.10) is a free upgrade and is supported on the same hardware as Mavericks (10.9).
If you previously installed OneNote for Mac and are on OS X Mavericks (10.9), you can continue using the older version of OneNote for Mac, however in order to get today's update or any future OneNote updates, you must upgrade your OS to Yosemite 10.10 or later.

I did this and found a version, but when I try to automatically update it, there's an embedded Apple ID attached, so I can't update.
If only Microsoft would provide a link to a a Mavericks Friendly version, that would a) make us all happy and b) dramatically increase my opinion for their vast corporation (hint, hint).
Many companies including Apple still allow you to install from the App Store the last version of software that is compatible with an OS of theirs, even the old iWork apps from Lion and Mountain Lion, but certainly not microsoft, no sir! I'll be damned if this company EVER makes a right move, EVER! How it is still standing instead of rumbling in a grave I do not know. I simply do not. Here I was, wanting to try OneNote, because I heard it was a good app, and instead I get a message telling me to UPGRADE my goddamn OS just to install a stupid note-taking app! Good thing microsoft didn't make any IMPORTANT apps that ACTUALLY needed to use the "latest and greatest capabilities of the disaster that is yosemite", such as big movie editing apps or DAWs.
Why am I saying this? Because I just wasted 15 minutes creating a new email to use as a microsoft account, and then the microsoft account itself just to get a message telling me it was all in vain. That's why I'm pissed, because I didn't trust my instinct to stay away from this wretched excuse of a software company!
I know it's pretty stupid but the latest office 2016 also requires Yosemite or later. On my MacBook Pro 13 retina I'm still using Mavericks because yosemite was full of bugs even with the latest version and a clean install. I'm hoping El Capitan will be better but I read that the current latest version still have a lot of bugs. On my maverick I'm still using the old version of OneNote which were kind of okay but printing sucks so I'm now avoiding using one note. It's too bad that Mac users are still a minority. At least we have better support from Microsoft compared to Linux.
