OneNote for Mac crashes on start

<p>Today, when using OneNote for Mac my MacBook Pro crashed. After rebooting, it told me OneNote had caused the crash. Now, everytime I open OneNote, the app crashed immediately. I've tried re-installing through the App Store and removing caches but it keeps crashing on start.</p><p></p><p>What to do? Most important is there are a lot of unsynced changes I cannot afford to lose...</p>

I was able to fix the crash on startup by following these steps from another thread:

  • Delete this folder: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.onenote.mac
  • Delete this folder: ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office
  • Open up “Keychain Access” app on your Mac, and search for “MicrosoftOffice”. If OneNote recognized that you signed in, you will have an entry with a long name. Delete it.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Try launching OneNote and signing in again.

    Please help!

    I am experiencing the same issue not being able to open One Note on my Mac Book Air OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6 (15G31)  I immediately receive a notice stating "Problem setting up One Note" when opening the app.

    I have successfuly located/ deleted the folders listed below

    • /Library/Containers/com.microsoft.onenote.mac
    • ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office

    As well a completing this step -

    • Open up “Keychain Access” app on your Mac, and search for “MicrosoftOffice”. If OneNote recognized that you signed in, you will have an entry with a long name. Delete it.

    After restarting my Mac and reopening the One Note app i still received the error message 

    "Problem setting up One Note".

    Please help or process a refund for this portion of Microsoft Office that I purchased with intent to use.

    Scott Balun's solution worked for me, but BEWARE:

    It seems you do NOT need to delete the second folder (the "UBF..." one). If you do decide to delete it, make a backup copy of it first. Because I deleted it, and it erased all of my email accounts, and I would have had to go back and set up all six of them again. I also lost access to old work emails on a server that I don't have access to anymore. I've got them saved in a back up folder, but what a waste of time and pain in the next to manually go back and do all of that work. 

    Anyway, the "UBF..." was backed up before deleted, so I was able to past it back in, and voilà! All my accounts and emails are back.
