In an earlier post in this thread, I mentioned backing up

However, I can't find it anymore!  Anyone know where the file is in Word 2011?  Maybe it's been subsumed into another preference document.

AFAIK - there is not any "factory" supplied method to transfer global key assignments from one template to another and this includes the Normal template.

I will use the Normal template as my example for the following and know that it will also work for any custom template that is attached to the active document.

You can printout the Global Key Assignments you have made by opening any document that has the Normal template attached and selecting File > Print. From there change the "Copies and Pages" selection to "Microsoft Word".

Then change "Print What" to "Key Assignments" and click the Print button.

This will give you a list of your custom assignments. You will need to enter them again into your new global template.

I believe the only method of automating this process would be with a macro and even then I don't think it would be perfect. Here is code that will list the KeyBinding entries in the Normal template and additional code would be needed if an attempt was made to store the bindings from one template and add them into another.

As I said, I don't believe it would be a perfect transition due to some key bindings being made to Word functions such as FileOpen or FileClose and others that might have been made to Word objects such as Styles or Symbols.

That's probably all just gibberish to most but the bottom-line is that it's complex and that's probably why there isn't any "factory" supplied method to do it.

Your question is a good one.  Maybe one of the mavens around here can answer.  I've used the Organizer for importing Styles; didn't realize it could be used to import Toolbars!!

Don't see a tab for keyboard shortcuts, although I would have expected them to be included in the Normal template.

I crash far less frequently when I save files in docx, I've found.

As for backups, I'm well covered on that front, having both Time Capsule and a wonderful off-site backup system called Carbonite copying everything, all the time. Another thing I would hate to lose is my decades' worth of autocorrections, which I've been carrying forward from one generation to the next.

I've stopped working on the file that had lots of tables and figures in it and am not likely to have the reassigning problem for a little while. However, I've decided to create a new Normal.dotm template. I did the following:

1. Quit Word
2. Rename Normal.dotm
3. Move it out of the Templates folder
4. Launch Word
5. Figure out how to open the Organizer without my old keyboard shortcuts
6. Copy over my custom toolbars and macros and save them in the Normal template.
7. Quit Word, clicking on "yes, save changes to Normal.dotm"

When I relaunch Word, my keyboard shortcuts have not carried over, although the two gizmos show up in the organizer, and one customized menu does not show up. If I go to Tools > Macro > Macros, my macros are all there intact.

Any idea what magic incantation I need to mutter?
