Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

Please don't advise repairing Office Starter; after the September updates it does not work and just results in the loss of Starter. As described in **this post**, you end up with a prompt to buy Office instead of the option to use Starter.

Au contraire: I have used it quite successfully. The prompt to buy Office is what appeared before repairing, not afterwards.

Many users were referred to this article, which gives repair instructions. When the repair did not work as advertised, they were advised to uninstall. Uninstalling according to those instructions (after the September 2013 updates) results in loss of the Microsoft Office Manager, which makes it impossible to reactivate Office Starter.

The icons for the files Excel wen from the traditional green with x in the upper left corner to an orange page with the upper right corner folded in.  The instructions for correcting this was to uninstall Excel 2010.  I did this and now the Excel file icon is the same shape as the orange icon but without color.  How do I get back to the green icon?
