My saved word documents no longer have the W icon but rather an orange icon that I can't open.  Spent 10 mins phoning Microsoft at great expense.  No answer Any help?

Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

    Hey I successfully downloaded the installation files for Office Starter 2010 - thank you very much for your help Rohn007. I followed your advice and googled "SetupConsumerC2ROLW.exe" and managed to find it.

    You said links to "SetupConsumerC2ROLW.exe" have been blocked by Microsoft in the past so please let me know if you think I should edit this post to remove the link - so it doesn't get blocked as well (but surely Microsoft wouldn't do that after all the trouble they've caused everyone!)

    Here's some more detailed info for anyone else who has uninstalled Office Starter and can't get it back:

    I googled "SetupConsumerC2ROLW.exe" and found a page on this Microsoft Community website we are on now titled "Office 2010 Starter is missing after installing Windows 8"

    It has a link to a website where I successfully downloaded the Office Starter installation file from.

    Download the file "SetupConsumerC2ROLW.exe" file from the internet such as per the link above.

    Don't just double click on it, but right click on the downloaded file, and select "Run as Administrator" (3rd option down).

    The program will download and install Office Starter 2010 in Windows 8.

    Simples. :)

    I followed the instructions above, including right clicking on the downloaded file and selecting "Run as Administrator", and Office Starter was installed on my computer.

    I was a little worried because the instructions only mention Windows 8 - but it works fine on Widows 7.

    At first all the Word files were still orange docx files but then I restarted my computer and they all went back to blue Word documents, hooray!!

    The first time I tried to open one a message popped up saying something like "Microsoft Office is downloading the required features and may appear un-responsive temporarily". This took a few minutes and then the file opened normally like it used to and I could edit it etc.

    When I right click on one and choose "properties"  it still says "Microsoft Word Document (.docx)" next to "Type of file" - I'm not sure if that's what it used to say but all I care about is that I can open and edit them like I used to be able to : )

    I thought I was going to have to follow my OEM's (ACER) advice and let them do a full "factory restore" of my computer. They said I needed to back-up all my important files, programs, documents and pictures first - which meant I was going to have to wait months before I could afford a 500GB external hard drive to do this.
