Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

Explorer is the program that shows all of your computer, documents, pictures, etc; each in its own folder. Just click Start then Computer (or My Computer). Find one of your Word DOCX documents and right-click it to get access to the Open with  menu item.

This exact thing happened to me also today! I did not have the option to "Open With" so I tried switching everything to the Microsoft Office Client Virtualization Handler and it worked. Everything is back as it was. Weird!

    Hello All,

I decided to do a system restore to before the Windows update event

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2464297/en-us

Everything appeared to be restored fine, and my Word Starter documents had the "W" icon. However, I was asked for my name and initials and now I get a message that says:

"Microsoft office has encountered a problem with licensing and will need to be reinstalled." (my paraphrase)

I had a MS Office 2010 starter that was working just fine. I'm getting mixed information on re-installing the MS office starter. Thoughts? Suggestions?

So this last update that was sent- was really a marketing tool- having everyone download the Microsoft office- seems kind of sneaky!
