Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

Also, I cannot click on a document and select Open With, because Word is not an option, not even when I Browse for it.

By the way, I'm using Word 2002, because that's what my boss wants me to use, and I have no need for Office at all.

Yes a serious issue indeed. It seems this has seriously stuffed around me and many others lives for the time being. After reading the other thread on this issue (Cannot open DOCX. files in Microsoft Office 2010 Starter

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010se-word/cannot-open-docx-files-in-microsoft-office-2010/b82afe2f-b93f-4d7c-9fc7-1a0605fe5d05) it doesn't appear as though there is much point in me trying to contact Acer for another copy of Office Starter. So I guess I will wait untill Monday and hope that Microsoft makes some way for us to easily download/re-install Office Starter on our machines. And also a way to download Office 2010 for those of us like Paul that have un-installed it as well as Starter. I also started to un-install Office a couple of times, as per instructions in this thread, but got worried and cancelled the un-install a few seconds into the process.

What does "This issue has been escalated to the Word product group" mean? I thought it meant that there was a group/community on this website called the "Word Product Group" where I would be able to find a thread with people discussing how to get Office Starter back if you have un-installed it. Is that the case? I had a search of the site and couldn't find anything called "Word Product Group". Or should I just keep looking at the page that I found this and the other thread on and hope that a new thread is started on Mon about how to re-install Office Starter?

Thanks for your post Suzanne, it's the first one I've read that makes me feel like someone knows what has happened to my computer and gives me some hope that a resolution will be found.

And even more to add.  After looking at my programs, I have Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System, and I can't delete it.  Is that what's causing the issue?  I have no clue at this point, but I've lost days worth of work that I can't afford to lose, and I'm already stressed enough in my life.  I did not need this headache added on top of it!!!  When I click on a document to try to open it with Word, my options include Microsoft Open XML Converter, but not Word.  I have no clue what that is or if it's relevant to this.

    Thanks!
