My saved documents are no longer the W icons but orange icons that I can't open. Please help.

My saved word documents no longer have the W icon but rather an orange icon that I can't open. Spent 10 mins phoning Microsoft at great expense. No answer Any help?

Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
Click Control Panel
Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
When uninstall finishes restart windows

Hi sll

I note that some of you are experiencing 'click to run' errors with office starter... some months ago I had a similar problem and no microsoft expert could help me. I could not use office starter due to this problem. The link below however resolved my problem but please be aware that you must have office 2010 in your programmes list for this to work and for you to re-install office 2010 starter. Good luck... it just may be what your looking for;

Ok, so I noticed the orange icons about two days ago, but I never took any notice. Tonight, I was going to work on one of my stories and it wouldn't open. Devastated and thinking my stories were gone (a lot of hours have gone into these), I Googled, and immediately found this forum, much to my relief.

However, after reading through everything, I was reluctant to meddle with the programs on my computer. I'm always paranoid that I'll do something I can't reverse.

So I simply did this.

I right clicked on one of my files, clicked 'Choose default program', and chose Microsoft Word. And the orange icons immediately disappeared. Everything is back to normal.

I don't know if anyone else had attempted this, but if you haven't, try this first, it worked for me.

You did exactly the right thing. It is simply a variation of of the instructions others have provided. You found a way to reset the "Windows Default File Associations"

It is good to be cautious about what changes you make to your system, especially if you don't know what you are doing.

A good strategy when you are unsure about making changes is to first make a full, image copy backup. Taht way, if you mess up too badly, you can restore back to a known good (or mostly good) backup / configuration.
