Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

Thanks this did the trick. I think this caused by the 'patch Tuesday' round from this week. It installed 'Microsoft Office 2010' along side the 'starter' edition. After I uninstalled that as mentioned in the 'winning answer' above the problem was also fixed.

You uninstalled the wrong version. You had to install 'Microsoft Office 2010' and not 'Microsoft Office 2010 starter'. On my computer they existed both after the 'patch Tuesday' update round, which installed the 'Microsoft Office 2010'.

My saved documents are no longer the W icons but orange icons that I can't open.

Me too . since yet another microsoft update ie 2 days ago on approx 10th Sept 2013.

When I switched on the PC the next morning  'orange icons' appeared.

My system came with preloaded Office 2010, so im trying to sort out product Key to see if that helps.

It looks like microsoft have come up with a way of trying to make us all buy the latest Office product.

I had the same problem but fixed it by simply uninstalling office 2010 and rebooting.  I think MicroSoft should give us all a free upgrade to latest office as compensation for this blunder
