Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

You would only see the "MS Client Virturalization Handler" if you have a Click to Run installation. Since what you did worked, apparently you do not have CTR. Which is fine.

Seems like this is working for everyone but when I click on "Choose default program" I only get two options -- Microsoft Office and Microsoft Word.  Can't find Microsoft Client Virtualization Handler either in the options box, when I click on "other programs" or when I browse.  So I clicked on Microsoft Word and all the files changed back to Word, excel, ppt, etc.  All seems good.

I have again escalated this issue to the Word team, requesting that SetupConsumerC2ROLW.exe be made available (officially) at the Office Download Center, with instructions. Judging from past experience, however, I don't hold out much hope that this request will be granted.

Thanks Suzanne. I too don't expect they will make it public,  but we can hope.

I just uninstalled the Microsoft Word 2010 that the update put on my computer and everything reverted back to Word Document and I am able to access all my folders again. Don't need all that other stuff. I had Word Starter still in my program files and that just took over just fine.

I uninstalled Microsoft Word 2010 and regained all my folders in my Documents and they opened again in Word Starter just fine.
