Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

well I uninstalled Microsoft office starter instead, and now I cant reinstall it (no copy anywhere, my explorer is affected also), so if I uninstall Microsoft office as well what would happen??? Who was the great idiot that configured these 'updates' I want to have a talk with them. I am sure there are millions affected by this.

I've noticed this happening on a lot of the computers in the large network that I administer. It's happening on office 2010 (all versions) and Office 2010 starter edition. Simply go to programs and features, find your version of office, right click it, and choose "change". Perform a repair on your version of office, and it will fix the icons, and they'll open with their proper programs. This is working on every computer I run a repair on.

    Hope this helps.
