My saved word documents no longer have the W icon but rather an orange icon that I can't open.  Spent 10 mins phoning Microsoft at great expense.  No answer Any help?

Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

    Thanks this did the trick. I think this caused by the 'patch Tuesday' round from this week. It installed 'Microsoft Office 2010' along side the 'starter' edition. After I uninstalled that as mentioned in the 'winning answer' above the problem was also fixed.

    Hi I'm the original person to post the question and though i'm glad lots of you are getting sorted out I'm not sorted! If I try to open a Word doc all I get is a Click-2-run configuration failure box. I may have jumped the gun by uninstalling Office 2000 Starter and can't re-install. There is now no link to Starter from the start menu. Please help me - this is now 3 / 4? days without being able to work. **** Microsoft.

    Thank you, I was actually able to suppress Office 2010 by simply uninstalling it.

    I did not do it immediately as I had already uninstalled the Starter and some people in the thread said it was not a good idea to suppress it (Office).

    Anyhow, now I can read my documents but I have to go through Word Pad (as I needed to write something really important today in the middle of all of that problem, I tried that solution)

    But, I still have the orange icons and now I don't see the regular Word anywhere :(
