Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

I tried repairing Office Starter as you instructed. When I clicked repair I got this message.

"Repairing Microsoft Office Starter-English was unsuccessful because an internet connection is required. Ensure your computer can access the internet and try again."

My internet connection is functioning fine as far as I can tell.

I may have checked the" Remove all Office settings related to this product" button sometime over the last few days of trying to fix this mess, I'm not sure any longer. If I did how do I fix the problem?

At his stage I am very frustrated and angry. I feel it is Microsoft's responsibility to fix this problem since it was their update that caused this problem in the first place.

We just saw this today and our management team sent us the below.  Haven't applied yet, but we've just been removing the Office 2010 Starter edition that came with the PCs.  Our users all use Office 2007 Pro, but still had the starter edition of 2010 and were having this problem.

Microsoft Office application icons disappear and are replaced by general MS Office orange icon due to Microsoft KB2589275 - Critical Update for Office 2010 update: September 10, 2013 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2589275
