My saved word documents no longer have the W icon but rather an orange icon that I can't open.  Spent 10 mins phoning Microsoft at great expense.  No answer Any help?

Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

    If you're using Starter and can't find winwordc.exe, and also don't have an active link to Word Starter or Excel Starter on the desktop, right-click on the desktop and create new shortcuts with the following paths:

    For Word:   "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft Word Starter 2010 9014006604090000

    For Excel:  "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft Excel Starter 2010 9014006604090000".

    Then right-click on the file you want to associate, and Open With > Choose Default Program.  Select one of those new desktop shortcuts and it should be linked up again.

    My users that have Windows 7 64 bit with the Office 2010 Starter Edition have had this problem with both Word and Excel files.  It appears the automatic updates this am changed the virtualization handler in a way that had the systems trying to use the full Office version to open the target file.  My users were prompted with a dialogue window to activate / license Office 2010 when trying to access these file directly, but opening either Word or Excel, then opening the file works flawlessly.

    Hi Jeeped, looked for winwordc.exe and couldn't find.  However I tried clicking on Microsoft office Client Virtualization Handler and everything reverted back to Word doc!!! Don't know why.  Thanks for help.

    The "Virtualization Handler" is another name for "Click to Run" (CTR). 

    When you have Office 2010 or 365 in a CTR installation you have to select the "virtualization Handler" as the default rather than the specific program name as you used to have to.  The virtualization handler is supposed to pass the document to the right program running inside of it's environment.
