My saved word documents no longer have the W icon but rather an orange icon that I can't open.  Spent 10 mins phoning Microsoft at great expense.  No answer Any help?

Please try to uninstall Microsoft office 2010 from program list in Programs and features. It will appear there with most recent date of installation. After uninstall of that application, Microsoft office 2010 Starter should work as before the update.

*This will not uninstall your office starter

Detailed steps:

  1. Click Start, then click Uninstall program if you cannot see it click “Programs and features”
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click “Uninstall program” if you do not see it click “Programs and features”
  4. On the program list locate “Microsoft office 2010” not “Microsoft office 2010 Starter”
  5. Right click Microsoft office 2010 and click on uninstall option
  6. When uninstall finishes restart windows

    Using the Virtualization Handler resolved my problem with "Orange Files".  An automatic update had installed Office 2010.  However, I prefer to keep using the Office 2010 Starter that was installed when I purchased the computer.  The Virtualization Handler was the only option that worked when I right clicked on one of the orange files.  Thanks very much to all who contributed to this Answer to my problem situation.

    If that is the case how do you explain “Installed on” date which is very recent, people also report that they haven’t had it installed before the issue.

    If you open Programs and features in your Control panel you will find Programs:

    1. Microsoft office 2010
    2. Microsoft office 2010 Starter

    You only need to uninstall first one Microsoft office 2010 which has most recent date of installation.

    You should not uninstall second option Microsoft office 2010 Starter

    I don't know that is correct.

    It is my understanding that the Programs and Features entry you have identified as #1 is also known as the "Microsoft Office Program Manager", which allows you to re-install Starter.  It is described on this page.
