excel skips to another workbook for no apparent reason

This happened to me starting in 2013 (through Office 365) as well.  It was infrequent enough that I dismissed it, and never heard anyone else have that problem.

Upgraded to 2016 around March/April, and it still happens.  It seems to be getting worse.

Today I am going through a list of dates and some of the dates have the wrong year.  I edit the cell, just changing 1/1/2013, backspace the 3 out, add 4, press enter.  Do the same to the next date, and pressing enter, and the keyboard is non-responsive as has been explained before.  I hit enter again, and it moves to another spreadsheet I have open.

This happened a few times in a row, this is the first time it was repeatable so I tried it again slowly.  I always thought maybe there's some keyboard shortcut I must be hitting.  But no, deliberately pressing each key I can confirm I am not pushing two keys at the same time.

I decided to google again since it's been months since I looked, after trying a few different phrases and wading through a lot of vba macro results (no macros on any of the open spreadsheets), I am glad I found this thread, and wanted to contribute to it.

This happens both on my work computer (win 7) and home computer (win 10 free upgrade), and also found one other person at work with the same issue.

Edit/Update:  After I posted above, I went back to edit more dates, and it still happened.  (note I forgot to mention it would always switch to the same spreadsheet, though I had 4 spreadsheets in total open).  I tried the only suggestion, to not have the other windows maximized (I pressed the resize button to un-maximize the window)...I tried it with just the spreadsheet it would always switch to, and it didn't work, it still switched to the now smaller window.  I then tried resizing and minimizing all 3 of the other spreadsheets, it did switch once but then it appeared to stop happening.  I re-maximized all the worksheets and so far it seems ok.  I hope this gets fixed permanently but next time I'm in this situation I'll try it again and post here.

I work in an office with 5 other users having permission on the same excel workbook.  We have always done it this way.

The last week or so (August 2016) the other users are having the workbook jump around to different cells.  One might open to an earlier cell and another to a different tab in the workbook.

I am the only one who doesn't get the jumping and I am the one who developed the workbook.

Does anyone have a really easy fix to this that doesn't involve needing a computer science degree?

I'm just joining this discussion, but I have a user seeing the same issue.  Any update from Microsoft?  Seems to be a wide spread issue.

1. What is the exact issue are you facing?

Click in a cell on one workbook, it goes to another (unrelated) workbook that's open.  This happens with 2 or more workbooks open at the same time.  And it happens with any excel file.

2. Did you try any troubleshooting steps?

Repaired Office.  Trying a re-install, but seems others have tried this  and were unsuccessful.

3. What is the version of Excel 2013 are you using?

Excel 2013 Professional Plus 32-bit.

I had the same problem when upgrading to Excel 2016.  The root cause was determined to be an Add-In (specifically, Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 Add-In for Excel).  Once the Add-In was disabled the problem stopped.  I'd recommend starting Excel in Safe Mode (without Add-Ins) then enabling your Add-Ins one at a time until you determine if an Add-In is causing the problem and if so, which one.

Let me throw more wood on the fire: editing a workbook and then cells freezing and then a different open workbook from the system tray popping to the front of my terminal happens to me both at home and in office on two different computers running two different copies of Excel 2016.  Happens at least once a week.
