excel skips to another workbook for no apparent reason

Quite often when I try to make an entry into a cell excel appears to freeze.  If I hit the enter button it skips to a different workbook.  There are no links between the two workbooks.  This has been happening for some time and is very annoying.

It just seems strange that nobody else seems to be having this problem.  Usually when I Google any type of technical problem someone else is having the same issue.  But with this one, nada.

    Hello,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting your query.

Let me assist you with Excel issue.

Few more details would help us to provide a better response.

Is your computer connected to a domain or network?

Do you use a 32bit or 64bit version of Excel 2013?

Did you install a MSI based version of Office 2013 or ‘Click to Run’ version of office 2013?

You may start Excel application in its safe mode and check if it works as expected.

Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

In the ‘Run’ window type Excel /safe and press ‘enter’.

Note: there is a space between the word Excel and the /

If Excel works as expected in application safe mode, then disable the add-in(s) by following the steps below and verify the status.

I hope the above information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.

    Thank you.

Thanks for your reply.  It looks like this will take some work.  Will get back when I have done this.

I downloaded Office 365 subscription version to a new Windows 8 laptop on 12/15/2013.  It is version 15.0.4675.1003 32 bit.  The operating system is 64 bit.

The computer is not connected to a network.

Running in Excel safe mode now.  Since this is an intermittent problem is there any reason I can't run in safe mode for a while to see if it shows up?  It seems to be running faster this way.

The only add in I can find that is checked is Actions : Date (XML).

What do you mean by I can’t run Excel in safe mode for a while?

Excel would always work faster in application safe mode because it disables all add-in.

You can disable the add-in and check how it works.

You can change the default printer and check it fixes.

Here is the link to change the printer.
