excel skips to another workbook for no apparent reason

Quite often when I try to make an entry into a cell excel appears to freeze.  If I hit the enter button it skips to a different workbook.  There are no links between the two workbooks.  This has been happening for some time and is very annoying.

I never use the file preview (in Windows Explorer) feature.

And I get this problem, usually jumping between windows of the same file.

This might be related. If I have file preview switched on and opening a file in excel, and as soon as I select an excel file it jumps to another excel session.

Something worth trying is to switch off file preview mode in file explorer and see if this stops the skipping behavour.

    It is july 2nd, 2019

This issue is happening to me everyday while I work on multiple excel sheets. It is very annoying -- if I miss that it happened for whatever reason, it will edit a different worksheet and sometimes change something very important

    this is unacceptable microsoft
