Quite often when I try to make an entry into a cell excel appears to freeze. If I hit the enter button it skips to a different workbook. There are no links between the two workbooks. This has been happening for some time and is very annoying.

Same issue here - closing the workbook that it skips to seems to solve the problem - no good if it's linked to it of course...

The original post on this thread was on 1/24/15. Numerous people are having the same problem using various computers and various versions of Excel since the 2013 version came out with separate windows for each spreadsheet.
Raju Das of Microsoft entered the thread on 2/11/15.
In over a year no one appears to have found a solution to this problem. I am not the only one on this thread who has reached the conclusion that this is a fundamental problem with Excel 2013+ that should be addressed by Microsoft.
Update:
I have been using the different laptop for a week and still have the problem.
It is about a 2 year old Lenovo. The Windows 8 operating system was reloaded and then upgraded to Windows 10. It has a fresh Office download and installation.
So the problem is not due to the specific computer or operating system and is not due to a specific Excel installation.

The seperate window for each open workbook configuration started in 2013 version.
I have no experience with either version so can't help.
I'm just nosy enough to inquire in hopes it will generate a legitimate and useful answer for you.
There are a few posters around here who would be willing to teach me a few things<g>
