excel skips to another workbook for no apparent reason

Quite often when I try to make an entry into a cell excel appears to freeze.  If I hit the enter button it skips to a different workbook.  There are no links between the two workbooks.  This has been happening for some time and is very annoying.

I have been running Excel in seperate memory spaces to try and avoid this issue for a number of years now by just doing Win+r and runnimg excel.exe /x.

    ...

Something new however yesterday, I had a single excel sheet open and it would freeze when entering data or moving around. The only way to fix it was to change the tab on the sheet or resize the window. This looked to like the same issue but when a single sheet is open.

Lots of people seem to be helped by running multiple Excel instances, one for each workbook.  But, some of us have the same problem with with multiple windows of the same workbook.  For example, after I enter a value in one cell, I press tab and type another value.  The second value appears in a different window and tab!  Clicking again on the cell where I want the problem does not enable entering a value in that cell.  I have to click somewhere in the second window, then back on the first window with the target cell.

(Running Windows 10 - 64 Pro, and the problem persists from Excel 2013 to Excel 2016.)

I'll add my name into the hat. I've been having this issue for many years. It happens every day and it's incredibly annoying.

it's shocking that this hasn't been fixed yet with the amount of money we've all paid for Office in the 5 years since this was reported...
