I can make even and odd pages have different footers, but I want page 4's to be different from page 2's and page 5's from page 3's.

To actually create a new footer for each page, you'll need a section break at the end of each page (and you'll have to unlink the relevant footers). But in what respect should footers be different? For example, if you want to include text from the page, you can format that text in a unique style and then make use of the STYLEREF field.

As indicated in my previous post, you could do a lot of the re-creation via scanning & OCR. That's typically far faster than retyping. With a good OCR package it could reduce a week's re-typing work to a couple of hours - mostly for reformatting.

I would agree but would urge you to assign a couple of law review types to proof read it. While OCR has improved greatly, it still messes up. Further, the Word formatting of OCR is generally terrible. I will often paste as plain text and then format using styles if it is something that I will be editing extensively.

How do you "unlink the relevant footers"? There is no such thing as "unlink" in word according to a help search.

How do you "unlink the relevant footers"? There is no such thing as "unlink" in word according to a help search.

In Word 2007 and later, activate the header/footer view (for example by double-clicking the header). Move to a footer that you want to unlink and then click to deselect the Link to Previous button on the Header & Footer Tools Design tab. Repeat the procedure for any other footers that you want to unlink.

Note that each Word section can have up to three footers (and also three headers): first page, even page, odd page. For all footers and headers to be available, you have to select both "Different odd and even" and "Different first page" on the Header & Footer Tools Design tab.

Each type of footer (header) must be separately unlinked from its "neighbor" in the preceding section.
