spell check is not working...how do I turn it on? (MS Word 2013)

I just upgraded to a full version of MS Office 2013. I am using Word and notice two things. One, it is not auto-correcting misspelled words as I type, and two, when I go to the "Review" tab and select "Spelling and Grammar" to do a spell check, it says "Spelling and grammar complete. You're good to go!" This is not correct. 

I've gone to the Options menu. Autocorrect is turned on. Nothing else seems to make logical sense to me.

Is anyone else having this issue? Can someone help? I NEED my spell check.

PS. My OS is Win7, 64-bit and I'm using Office 2013.

    Had the same problem, and it persisted when i copy-pasted the content onto a new file. Tried every solution given on the internet, nothing seemed to work. Although I could not find a cure, a different solution would be to paste the content on a blank "Google Docs" file and download it as a word file. This solved my problem!!

    You selected the entire document (with Ctrl+A or by some other method) and made sure that the "Do not check spelling and grammar" box was completely clear--not shaded?

    On the Review tab, click Language in the Language group, and then click Set Proofing Language.

    In the Language dialog box, select the language that you want.

    If the Do not check spelling or grammar check box is selected, click to clear the check box.

    If Still Not works

    Go to registry:-

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\ProofingTools\1.0\Override

    Delete

    exit from Registry

    restart the WORD 2013......

    Again, the setting for "do not check" is not something that applies to Word as a whole nor even to documents or paragraphs. Rather it is a character-level setting like bold or Italic. It can be contained in (and modified through) Styles as can other character-level formatting. It is generally applied to selected text.

    If you use your first steps on selected text, it will change the setting for that text.

    If the Registry setting you mention exists, I suppose deleting it will help. This is not something that is normally there.
