spell check is not working...how do I turn it on? (MS Word 2013)

I just upgraded to a full version of MS Office 2013. I am using Word and notice two things. One, it is not auto-correcting misspelled words as I type, and two, when I go to the "Review" tab and select "Spelling and Grammar" to do a spell check, it says "Spelling and grammar complete. You're good to go!" This is not correct. 

I've gone to the Options menu. Autocorrect is turned on. Nothing else seems to make logical sense to me.

Is anyone else having this issue? Can someone help? I NEED my spell check.

PS. My OS is Win7, 64-bit and I'm using Office 2013.

    I have done this several times and every time I close the box and go back to the document it is re-checked again. Like a lot of things MS very frustrating.

    If you want the change to apply to all future documents using the template you chose, you also need to click the "Set as Default" button in the same window where you unchecked "do not check..." and answer "yes" to the question that appears.

    Correct - clear, not shaded. Also tried checking it, closing, re-opening, and unchecking again as some other threads have recommended.

    I have also:

    • disabled "CUSTOM.dic" and created a new, blank custom dictionary.

    I should add, Spell Check is not working in any other office program, either (Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook). All say that it is "...complete; you are good to go!"

    I too, have tried all of the above, but spellcheck will still not work!!! So frustrated!!

    • confirmed that "Hide Spelling errors..." is not checked in Proofing Options.
    • disabled all add-ons in Word.
    • verified that I do not have the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\ProofingTools\1.0\Override key.

    - renamed default template (normal.dotm).

    • "Suggest from Main Dictionary only" is UN-checked.
    • verified CUSTOM.dic is the only custom dictionary selected.
    • disabled "CUSTOM.dic" and created a new, blank custom dictionary.

    I should add, Spell Check is not working in any other office program, either (Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook). All say that it is "...complete; you are good to go!"
