Word 2007 launches "Configuration Process" every time

I have an odd problem. Can anyone help?

It's a long story and I won't bore you but I need to have Office 2007 (less Excel) and Excel 97 installed on my new Win 8 Pro computer.

Right now, every time I load Word 2007, I get a window titled "Configuration process" and a green progress bar. It lasts for about 30 seconds and then Word is usable.

Here's how I got there:

  1. I installed Office 97.
  2. I installed Office 2007.
  3. I couldn't get shortcuts to Excel worksheets to Open Excel 97 so I made Excel 2007 unavailable.
  4. Thereafter, every time I loaded Excel 97 I got the error message  "One of your object Libraries (stdole2.tlb) is missing or damaged. Please run setup to install it."
  5. I uninstalled Office 97 and re-installed only Excel 97.
  6. Now Excel 97 works as it should but I get the "Configuration Process" every time I load Word 2007.
  7. I did a repair install of Office 2007 but this didn't change anything.

All other Office 2007 programs load and operate normally.

Any idea how I can get rid of the "Configuration Process"?

This issue may occur if the registry settings are corrupted for Office installations. Let us add dword for Word in registry following the steps below:

If the above mentioned suggestion does not help, then you may follow these steps to manually and the Dword for each Word and PowerPoint 2010 applications to Windows Registry:

Note: The steps in the link also applies to Windows 8 OS.

Click Start, go to Programs, go to Accessories, click Run, copy each line one at a time and hit enter. You need to accept the changes for the registry, click OK.

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

Restart the computer and check for the issue.

You have provided a solution for Windows 8 OS. I have Windows 10 OS and can't find Accessories in Programs to be able to get to Run and then type in your link. I'm not particularly tech savvy. Can you provide a solution for Windows 10 OS please?

The "registry hack" mentioned in Aravinda Balakrishna's post is discussed in MVP Graham Mayor's article at http://www.gmayor.com/Toolbars_in_word_2007.htm.

However, you only need that solution if you are running multiple versions of Office on the same machine. If you are running a single version, the registry hack does not apply.

    It may not have worked for you, but it certainly worked for me. I believe it works for most users. I would urge using the registry change rather that a total uninstall. I currently have Word 97, Word 2003, Word 2007, Word 2010 and Word 2013 running on my computer, sometimes simultaneously, without the reconfiguration problem because I used the methods described in this thread.

    Kindly stop re-posting this nonsense. As has already been pointed out, your supposed solution is totally ineffective at dealing with the issues discussed in this thread. There is not and never has been a need to uninstall Office to solve this problem. Indeed, following your advice would immediately result in the exact same problem re-appearing when both versions of Office are subsequently reinstalled.

    I wouldnt post this if this was uneffective... the problem that happens when installing 2 versions of office is that sometimes the registry of one version overlaps another which causes one of them not to work. But i don't expect you to understand that. However, it is still more effective then doing what is described in this thread. (MY OPINION)
