Word 2007 launches "Configuration Process" every time

I have an odd problem. Can anyone help?

It's a long story and I won't bore you but I need to have Office 2007 (less Excel) and Excel 97 installed on my new Win 8 Pro computer.

Right now, every time I load Word 2007, I get a window titled "Configuration process" and a green progress bar. It lasts for about 30 seconds and then Word is usable.

Here's how I got there:

  1. I installed Office 97.
  2. I installed Office 2007.
  3. I couldn't get shortcuts to Excel worksheets to Open Excel 97 so I made Excel 2007 unavailable.
  4. Thereafter, every time I loaded Excel 97 I got the error message  "One of your object Libraries (stdole2.tlb) is missing or damaged. Please run setup to install it."
  5. I uninstalled Office 97 and re-installed only Excel 97.
  6. Now Excel 97 works as it should but I get the "Configuration Process" every time I load Word 2007.
  7. I did a repair install of Office 2007 but this didn't change anything.

All other Office 2007 programs load and operate normally.

Any idea how I can get rid of the "Configuration Process"?

This issue may occur if the registry settings are corrupted for Office installations. Let us add dword for Word in registry following the steps below:

If the above mentioned suggestion does not help, then you may follow these steps to manually and the Dword for each Word and PowerPoint 2010 applications to Windows Registry:

Note: The steps in the link also applies to Windows 8 OS.

Click Start, go to Programs, go to Accessories, click Run, copy each line one at a time and hit enter. You need to accept the changes for the registry, click OK.

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

Restart the computer and check for the issue.

You have provided a solution for Windows 8 OS. I have Windows 10 OS and can't find Accessories in Programs to be able to get to Run and then type in your link. I'm not particularly tech savvy. Can you provide a solution for Windows 10 OS please?

The "registry hack" mentioned in Aravinda Balakrishna's post is discussed in MVP Graham Mayor's article at http://www.gmayor.com/Toolbars_in_word_2007.htm.

However, you only need that solution if you are running multiple versions of Office on the same machine. If you are running a single version, the registry hack does not apply.

    You need to look at the website for which the link was included in my post where the following instructions are given:

    1. In Windows 7 or Windows Vista, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and then select Run.
    2. In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Run.
    3. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

    reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1 4. (Optional) Instead of typing the command line, you can  click here to copy it to your clipboard, right-click an empty section of the Run box, select Paste, and then press Enter. 5. Verify that the problem is resolved.

    But as I said, because you are using Office 2007, you need to replace 14.0 with 12.0

    In Windows 8, 8.1 to bring up the Run dialog into which you need to type of copy the command, go to the Start Search facility and type Run and then click on the Run item that appears

    Recently restored Win 8.1 to my computer and am in the process of restoring programs.   (This is SO OLD SCHOOL, I do wish Microsoft would finally come up with a way not to have to reload Windows AND APPLICATIONS when stuff hits the fan.  I resist doing that until at least 6 months of troubled work is occurring.)

    Anyway, I was experiencing the problems described in here and already reinstalled Office, which got rid of the problem in Excel, and I think in Powerpoint too, but not Word.

    I first followed the link to where the two FixIt links are, and ran the 50781 for later versions of Office (I have v.2010).  Fixit did not fix it.  I came back here and copied your reg add command (easier than typing it into regedit ) and IT WORKED!!!  YAY!!!

    As Doug indicates, his post is basically a copy/paste from http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2528748. Your post refers only to running the 50781 FixIt from that site but, as the site says, you should have run the 50780 FixIt first:

    use one or more of the following methods in the order in which they appear

    You need only use the 50781 FixIt if the 50780 FixIt wasn't enough. The 50780 FixIt applied the same registry update that you applied manually.
