excel 2013 can't open old files

I got windows office 2013 and installed it on my windows 7 laptop.  I have old office 2007 excel files that I can't open, and some that will only open when I go through the program and search for them. After loading some files I tried to save them in the new format. But even after that I can't open the file. I tried coping and pasting the info, again with no sucess. what can I do to fix this.

    This did not help at all... so what is next ... I had an older copy of MS Office suit on my computer I had installed Office 2013 (HUP) over it.. Then recently when I had a Solid State HD installed I have my computer guru take out programs I was not using... like the older version of MSO. I did not think that would affect it but ??

    I'm not quite sure what to do as my computer is in Windows 10 and I don't know if that applies to my computer too. I tried to repair the file using the new feature and even did what you showed above, yet no options appeared.

    Hello, I found out that my computer was opening the files in protected view so i changed my setting so i could open any files i downloaded, and this immediately fixed the problem. Idk if you have tried this, but if you haven't give it a try!

    I am not understanding... These are files I created in an earlier version of XL not files I downloaded.

    I would be more   than happy to try your fix  if I knew how to change to change my setting from

    protected view

    To solve this issue you need to open office 2013 en go to the following

    File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View

    Then disable all option.. click OK..

    exit office and open the file you want to open

    Has anyone else found anything yet?

    This process above allows me to open the file, but it only stays open for 5 secs and then goes blank and not responding.
