excel 2013 can't open old files

I got windows office 2013 and installed it on my windows 7 laptop.  I have old office 2007 excel files that I can't open, and some that will only open when I go through the program and search for them. After loading some files I tried to save them in the new format. But even after that I can't open the file. I tried coping and pasting the info, again with no sucess. what can I do to fix this.

    I have been getting the same "file is corrupted" message, and none of the information here helped.

    I was looking around and found something that worked without a bunch of weird steps.  

    Right click on the file, and click on properties.

    at the bottom of the General tab.  There is a security notice.

    "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer."

    Click the Unblock button, then click apply.

    File now opens without an error.

    Hope this helps some of you.

    This tip above worked for me, as well as then opening excel first, and then opening the file.  A bit ridiculous to have to go through all that, but it worked. THANK YOU!

    Hi Michael

    I had the same problem - installed 365, uninstalled 2007 and then could not open any Excel files from email. I used your 'Quick repair' fix - and it worked!

    Many thanks for posting your solution.

    I wonder why Microsoft has not fixed this yet?

    Some of the Excel files was not opening with Office 2013.

    Here are the steps that i performed to open excel files:

    1. Right click on the file name
    2. Click Properties
    3. In the tab General look at the very bottom, below the Attributes it displays:

       Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.

    Next to the text there is a button Unblock

    1. Click Unblock, then Apply, and OK
    2. Open the file regularly.
