excel 2013 can't open old files

I have done all the possible steps and troubleshooting

file association steps are irrelevant (although I did follow them) because the association is correctly set.

Out IT has looked into it and their verdict that it is a MS bug and we can only wait for the fix from MS

I am experiencing a very similar problem as the ones shown here except I have just installed Windows 365 today and all my files have now migrated across to 2013, I can't open any of them whether it be Excel, Word, Outlook - the whole package.

When I click on a file in any of the Office products I get an error message saying that "Microsoft Excel has stopped working windows is trying to find a solution" and then it just closes down. This happens whenever I try to load up the software.

Can you help? Do you think there has been an issue with the installation of the new Microsoft Office 365? It works perfectly OK on my HTC One!

I am having issues with Excel 2013 as well.

My excel file (.xlsx and .xls) which was created in Excel 2007 will open however when I try to navigate around the worksheet in anyway, excel says it has encountered a problem and closes the program.

If I open Excel in Safe Mode, I can navigate the file fully.

I have tried the fixes and diagnostics and compatability modes and also scanned the files to ensure they're not corrupt and nothing seems to work.

I do not want to have to continue opening Excel in Safe Mode every time I want to edit a file.

Has this problem been fixed yet?

Did you uncheck the option ‘**Run this program in compatibility’**mode for Word?

If not, uncheck the option and let us know how it works.

Also uncheck the same option for Excel application as well and verify the status.

This problem may occur if the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) setting in Excel is selected.

For Word 2013 issue, ensure Word is not running in Compatibility mode using the following steps provided below and check if that helps to resolve the issue: 

a. Go to the location,

In 32 bit Operating system,

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office 15

In 64 bit Operating system,

C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office 15

C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office 15

b. Right click on winword.exe>Properties.

c. Click on Compatibility tab, uncheck the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode’.

d. Click on Apply and click on ok.
