Disable "pick up where you left off"

Have any of you figured out how to turn this "Welcome back, pick up where you left off" bookmark thing? I've gone through all the options and add-ins I can find, and I can't make it stop doing this.

On the same track I deleted all the subkeys under 'Reading Locations' and then made the 'Reading Locations' key read-only to everyone.

This has stopped Word writing to the key and I no longer get the message when I re-open a document.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Reading Locations

That looks like a good place to start.

    Here is an easy workaround for the problem:

    Whether or not the “pick up where you left off?” function is executed depends upon how the saved file is subsequently called. 

    • If you initiate a call to the file using software external to Word, say from a desktop shortcut or from the Microsoft File Explorer, the function will not be called.
    • If you first start up Word and call the file from “Recent Documents” or using the File/Open/Computer/Browse menu, the function will be called.

    The regedit fix does not seem to work for documents saved to OneDrive -- which in turn makes OneDrive sort of useless to me, as I am just as annoyed with this "feature" as others are.  MS, why don't you give users the option to turn this feature on or off, instead of forcing it on everyone (or everyone who doesn't want to have to go through cumbersome registry hacks)?
