Have any of you figured out how to turn this "Welcome back, pick up where you left off" bookmark thing? I've gone through all the options and add-ins I can find, and I can't make it stop doing this.

On the same track I deleted all the subkeys under 'Reading Locations' and then made the 'Reading Locations' key read-only to everyone.
This has stopped Word writing to the key and I no longer get the message when I re-open a document.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Reading Locations
That looks like a good place to start.
Here is the only complete solution. Uninstall Office 2013 from your computer. Buy and download Office 2010 (or buy it on a disk so you can keep it forever). Then not only will you do away with "resume reading", you will get the excellent Picture Manager back (which Office 2013 has replaced with "Photo for Dummies.")

Well, uninstalling Office 2013 seems like overkill, when there is a registry hack that actually works. Of course, it would be even better if there was an option in Word 2013 to turn off the resume reading feature.
You would think that a new feature, that a large number of users wouldn't use, and that presents an annoying inconvenience to people who use Word like I do, could be turned off without a hack (which I'm uncomfortable doing despite being a Word user since WIndows 3.1). I've been using 2013 for 6 months now and I still make the mistake of immediately trying to work in a newly opened document during those first few seconds when the "pick up" notice is displayed, only to discover I've messed up and I have to CTRL-Z six times.
