Have any of you figured out how to turn this "Welcome back, pick up where you left off" bookmark thing? I've gone through all the options and add-ins I can find, and I can't make it stop doing this.

On the same track I deleted all the subkeys under 'Reading Locations' and then made the 'Reading Locations' key read-only to everyone.
This has stopped Word writing to the key and I no longer get the message when I re-open a document.

The Resume reading feature in Word allows reopening a document and keeps reading right where you left off. Word automatically bookmarks the last place you were reading. The feature is built-in and currently there is no option to disable.
To turn off reading layout view
· Click Close in the upper-right corner of the screen, or press ESC/press ALT+C.
Prevent Full Screen Reading view from opening automatically
You can prevent Full Screen Reading view from opening automatically when you receive a Microsoft Office Word document in e-mail.
· In Full Screen Reading view, click View Options.
· Click Open Attachments in Full Screen to turn off the feature, and then click Close to return to Print Layout view.

That's unfortunate. Any chance you can just tell me where the registry key for this "feature" is so I can delete it from there?

So close!!! That is, indeed, where they track it. I deleted the key and everything was A-Ok...then I restarted my machine and (darn it!) there was that irritating popup flag again, and it had gone ahead and reinserted the key into the registry.
I still think you're on to something here. I'll keep playing with it.
