Have any of you figured out how to turn this "Welcome back, pick up where you left off" bookmark thing? I've gone through all the options and add-ins I can find, and I can't make it stop doing this.

On the same track I deleted all the subkeys under 'Reading Locations' and then made the 'Reading Locations' key read-only to everyone.
This has stopped Word writing to the key and I no longer get the message when I re-open a document.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Reading Locations
That looks like a good place to start.
It is much faster to just create a bookmark at the point where you left off.
These automatic whatevers that y'all come up with are never helpful. People who read long documents already know how to mark their place, using a method they choose. If you invent an obnoxious little flag thing that pops a comment box up in my face when I start my working day, you need to make sure it's easy to turn off!
Note that no one here has invented "pick up where you left off." The vast majority of posters are volunteers and we do not represent Microsoft. If you want to make a suggestion for Microsoft, go to the forum at http://word.uservoice.com.
A workaround involving a registry hack has been suggested in this thread (and it is also marked as Answer). Try it if you wish.
First, clicking Close just closes the file. It doesn't change anything.
Second, there is no menu or dialog box labelled "View Options."
Third, now my document is in that annoying and useless "Reading Mode" and there's button to get out of it!
