Have any of you figured out how to turn this "Welcome back, pick up where you left off" bookmark thing? I've gone through all the options and add-ins I can find, and I can't make it stop doing this.

On the same track I deleted all the subkeys under 'Reading Locations' and then made the 'Reading Locations' key read-only to everyone.
This has stopped Word writing to the key and I no longer get the message when I re-open a document.

That looks like a good place to start.
"The Resume reading feature in Word allows reopening a document and keeps reading right where you left off. Word automatically bookmarks the last place you were reading. The feature is built-in and currently there is no option to disable."
So when did word become a "reading" program? How many people actually use word to read documents that are long enough to warrant such a feature? After 15+ years of using Word, I have never found a need to have reading bookmarks in that program. If I need to read something that long, it is typically done in other programs or on paper.
Just like the others that have posted in this thread, this feature is a real nuisance if you don't need it as I would imagine is the case for the vast majority of users. At least give the vast majority the option to turn it off! Word is not an E-Reader.
duffym111, I was going to suggest that too.
Finally I can open up a word document, and not have to wait 4 seconds for that message to go away. I hated it because that thing would take the keyboard focus and my CTRL-F wouldn't bring up the find dialog. Microsoft just trying to slow me down.

No one can shut off this virus, traps keystrokes and causes undue pain to the handicapped trying to use the keyboard.
MS: poll your users when you add a new "feature" that cannot be turned off even with good old REGEDIT.
