Can Word open a .odt file?

I don't know how you can say downloading and installing a complex application is faster than opening a web page, but regardless, please try OneDrive with your most challenging ODF files and reply with the results.

That's a step in the right direction.

But it's defniitly quicker to install libreoffice on MacOSX, but Officeonline has the advantage to offer the same interface as Office.

Mac users no longer have to download or install any software at all to open and edit Open Document Format files. Microsoft has just added free ODF support to free Microsoft Office on line at OneDrive.com.

Having said that, I don't know how good ODF support is in OneDrive at the moment. If people have ODF files they can publicly share (no private information, no confidential information) on OneDrive and post links in replies here, it would be interesting to see how good or bad Microsoft is doing on ODF support.

I tried simple Writer and Calc files, but I am hoping those of you with more challenging content will give OneDrive a workout.

I don’t think any company or organization is forcing any other company or organization to adopt OOXML. The standards body chose OOXML as the standard. Microsoft adopted the standard as default, which means most files will be in OOXML file format. OpenOffice retains ODT as the default, but has full support for OOXML (at least in LibreOffice). It seems to me to be a no-brainer for everyone to use OOXML as the default, but no one is forcing anybody to do so. Switching to OOXML in LibreOffice is trivial - just one click in a setting. No big deal there.

It's weird, you seem to know what you are talking about ( MVP ! ) but all your poitns are non sense.

OOXML wasn't chosen as "the standard" actually aven MSOffice stil does not really implement this "standard" which is OOXML STRICT. 2007 and 2010 implement the ECMA and transitional which is nothing but blobs in XML .

Do you understand that Blob in XML cannot be standard ? You shoud start with this.

Then nodoby should use OOXML to exchange files are you are really not Sure if anybody will be able to open it correctly ( even with MSOFFICE ! ) 

ODF 1.2 , as fully supported in Office 2013 seems to be a better choice by now.
