I'm using Office for Mac 2008, version 12.3.5. I've received a .odt (Open Office) file on an email but cannot open it. I did get a message that the file may be corrupt or contain unreadable elements. Is there anything I can download to read it assuming that it just hasn't been recognised or should Word read it & therefore it must be corrupt?

Word Online defaults to docx format, not odt. Odt is an optional save format in that version. Here is Microsoft's page on which features are supported: Differences between the OpenDocument Text (.odt) format and the Word (.docx) format used by Word Online
I dot understand wy word does not support .odt files,
because if you make a word document in Microsoft onedrive it is automatically odt
word online support it also (sort of) but it has comparability problems (like with images)
it is very frustrating because when you want to edit it in the (full) offline version it will not open :/
if you want to open you document I recommend to instal libre office and save it as an .docx file :/
This is nonsense, and a very weaselly use of the passive to avoid saying who did what. ODF was adopted as a standard. MS dropped it in favour of OOXML, which was accepted as an international standard amidst much controversy. The ODF standard was never dropped by anyone other than MS, and development on ODF continues.

Microsoft did not drop ODF support from Microsoft Office for Windows. ODF support is present in the past 3 versions of Microsoft Office for Windows: Office 2010, 2013 and 2016. Microsoft also supports ODF in the web version of Microsoft Office.
Microsoft did not drop ODF support from Microsoft Office for Mac. The Mac version has simply never supported ODF file formats. The work-around for Mac users is to open ODF files in the free web version of Microsoft Office or use LibreOffice, NeoOffice, or OpenOffice.
Recently Microsoft opened a site where feature requests can be made and voted on. So far no one has made a request for supporting ODF, so if this is something you wish to see Microsoft do, by all means please express your wish here:
