MS Word 2007 crashing and .wbk files appearing on desktop - repairs

Dear Community,

I am currently using MS Word and it keeps on crashing.

I have noticed that in every instance when the MS Word 2007 restarts - the ribbon down the side will show four or five instances of one document.

I usually do not know which one to choose - one will have repairs - of which when I try and see the location of the repairs - I can not locate them.

The ribbon on the top of the screen advises me that I have Macro's - I understand this as I save most documents as Macro enabled as some of my documents have pictures etc in them.

I have ended up with a lot of documents with parts missing.

I also have MS Word creating Back up's - this is confusing me and I have more icons on my desktop. When word crashes - most of my information has disappeared.

I am only new to MS Word 2007 - so I do not want to loose any data - yet I also want MS Word 2007 to work and not crash when mainly working on large documents.

    I also came across these files in the %temp% file - would these be the back up files as I had the incorrect path noted?

    My system is unstable and crashing and I am receiving numerious copies at different parts of the day where the system has saved the file.

    In one instance I was so afraid, I saved all seven copies just in case.

    I am so ill, I do not know which one is the correct one.

    Also a quick question - what would you use for a data back up as I have lost a lot of data from my USB External Hard Disk Drive.

    If you move the document files to a new location then of course the recent files links will not work because they point to the old location. Clear the list and open the files from their new location to re-add them to the list.

    tmp is a common extension used by a variety of applications for temporary files. asd extension is most commonly used as extension for Word auto-recovery files. They may or more likely may not contain a copy of the document. You can try opening them in Word, but they usually produce garbage.

    I have no idea what is in the Zip files you have deleted. Restore them and put them in a folder other than temp before opening them to view the contents.

    External USB connected hard disc drives are fine. Just ensure that you don't unplug or switch off without using the safe unplugging method, or data can be corrupted.

    Defragmentation achieves little, but with a system that is prone to crashing it can cause hard drive corruption if the crash occurs during the defragmentation. This is not an answer to your problems.

    Thank you for the in depth response to my enquiries. I think I went a bit overboard. 

    I appreciate that you took so much time. I just am not still sure where to place the location for the tools location that you suggested - my Word 2007 is still not behaving correctly.

    Can you please direct me through where the tools path that you suggested is located - I have included a screen shot?

    I am only a novice at computers - I also do not think that you understand that with my health - I am not quite with it.

    Hello Graham,

    I see that you are assisting other people that are having issues like mine.

    I am now having Word saying that it has changes to the Normal Template - do I wish to save changes?

    I also have an error message about insufficient memory.

    Do I have to do all the steps again?

    I am so sorry that I am having trouble with MS Word.

    It makes me feel bad contacting you all the time. I see that other people have the same issue.
