FWIW I have updated my web page Scan into Word, mentioned earlier in this old thread, to include scanning into Word 2013. Alternative coding is included for Excel and Outlook.
Unfortunately I don't think Doug's suggestion will work with Word 2013. It does however work with Word 2007 and 2010.
It looks as though Wordbasic is not available in this version, but the VBA help which would have documented this has apparently been eliminated in favour of a link to inpenetrable on-line help and frankly I lost the will to live before I found a reference to it.
Graham,
The WordBasic object is still available in 2013, but the InsertImagerScan method was deimplemented. I filed a bug about this in the beta, and it was closed as By Design.
There is still a Scanned Image button on the Insert tab in OneNote 2013, and you could copy the scan from there to Word. As far as I know, that's the only way to scan directly into any Office 2013 document. You might as well use the scanner's native software to scan to a graphics file and then use Insert Picture. Bleh.

Thanks for that feedback. I suppose we should be thankful for small mercies.
