Excel doesn't open window in size last closed

In Excel 2007 when I opened a new sheet it opened in a window that was the same size and in same position as the last window I closed. In Excel 2013 every time each new sheet is opened in a small window positioned in the lower left quadrant. I open multiple windows a day and having to resize each one is very time consuming.

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting the question.

Excel usually remembers the size and the position of the last opened Excel file.

Let’s re-size the Excel window and verify the result

Open Excel and click on restore button which appears upper right corner of the screen between x(close) and _ (minimize) buttons.
Now drag the double ended arrow which appears in the corner and re-size accordingly.
You may also move it by dragging it by the title bar, now close and re-open Excel and verify the result.

I just switched to MS Office 2013 (forced to because of a new work laptop that had MS Office 2013 installed).

I had this issue (Excel file opening in a half window) with some, but not all of my existing files.

I was able to fix this for all of my windows that opened in a "half window", by clicking on "New Window" in the "View" tab, and then saving the workbook. When I re-opened, the issue was gone. I have no idea why this works, and it seems counter-intuitive to click "New Window" to get an existing window out of a "half-window" display. All I know is that it fixed my problem files (about a dozen). I hope this works for others as well.

Glad that that solved your issue.

My issue is that I want different files to open in particular size windows to fit my desktop. The fix you are using only remembers the last window size used. Excel just doesn't work for power users as it used to. I have had to purchase Office Tab (an excellent programme) to fix my issues.

Right, all the solutions offered so far seem to work only for a single workbook open at any time.

I typically have 3-6 workbooks open at any time, and they are best displayed with different sized and shaped windows. Opening one of them, when there are other pages open already, ALWAYS displays them as square, or the identical dimensions of the currently active window.

It's truly scandalous that after 2 decades of a flexible feature, Microsoft cannot be bothered to reproduce the feature when developed, or fix it when they get legitimate feedback. It's almost larcenous.

In any case, thanks for the tip about Office Tab -- I will check it out, but mostly I feel like finding ways to give up on Office2013 and going back, somehow, to a previous, pre-gutted version.

I agree! This is annoying as ****!!! I spent a lot of money for Office 2013 and this piece of software is not able to remember the size and window position for Word, Excel, ... The first app window works fine. It remembers the last known size and position. As soon as you open a second window from the same application, either word or windows, it places itself in a 'cascading way'. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED!!!!!
