Excel doesn't open window in size last closed

In Excel 2007 when I opened a new sheet it opened in a window that was the same size and in same position as the last window I closed. In Excel 2013 every time each new sheet is opened in a small window positioned in the lower left quadrant. I open multiple windows a day and having to resize each one is very time consuming.

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting the question.

Excel usually remembers the size and the position of the last opened Excel file.

Let’s re-size the Excel window and verify the result

  1. Open Excel and click on restore button which appears upper right corner of the screen between x(close) and _ (minimize) buttons.
  2. Now drag the double ended arrow which appears in the corner and re-size accordingly.
  3. You may also move it by dragging it by the title bar, now close and re-open Excel and verify the result.

I just switched to MS Office 2013 (forced to because of a new work laptop that had MS Office 2013 installed).

I had this issue (Excel file opening in a half window) with some, but not all of my existing files.

I was able to fix this for all of my windows that opened in a "half window", by clicking on "New Window" in the "View" tab, and then saving the workbook.    When I re-opened, the issue was gone.  I have no idea why this works, and it seems counter-intuitive to click "New Window" to get an existing window out of a "half-window" display.  All I know is that it fixed my problem files (about a dozen).  I hope this works for others as well.

    There is no *.ini file which saves the last opened window setting.

    I would require additional information for better assistance:

    1. Are you experiencing this issue in other Office/non-Office applications (Notepad or Internet Explorer)?
    2. Did you perform any customization in Excel?

    Let's delete files from the following locations and verify the result:

    Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\Root\Templates

    Users\user_name\Appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

    Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\Root\Office15\XLSTART

    Users\user_name\Appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

    Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\Root\Office15\STARTUP

    Note: If you're not able to find file in any of the folders, you may proceed with the next folder. Enable show hidden folders to view the App data folder.

    When I do as you suggest...the new window opens at the correct width...but not the correct height.

    Is there an .ini file that records the "last window size" for Excel that I can delete and allow Excel to create a "clean" version?

    I'm  using Excel 2007 on Windows 7.

    I am amazed as I thought I had tried the same steps many times and it didn't work. But, it appears to be working now. Thank you.

    Just one other item. A minor one is that each new window that opens is offset a bit from the prior window. I guess this is done so you can see the title bars of each of the lets say 5 windows. But the fact is that if you focus on the first one opened it will overlay the title of the others. In my case I depend on the task bar to change focus and having the windows open offset to the right means they take over more screen space so I have to move them all to the left (I work in half-screen mode most of the time on sheets so I can watch another program that operates in real-time). Even after I've moved 5 sheets to the left when I open the 6th one Excel remembers where the 5th was positioned and places the new 6th one to the right of that. Annoying. I'd like all sheets to open left aligned.
