I'm an attorney, and I created a great litigation and trial-management system using only OneNote. We put it to use in a large "mass action" case with over fifty plaintiffs and tens of thousands of exhibits. The system allowed us to completely outmaneuver the plaintiffs at trial, and we were able to line up exhibits, deposition citations, and both direct and cross examination questions from a single program. We all credit a great deal of our defense verdict to the system.
The key feature that let us build the various pages for trial quickly was the ability to drag and drop exhibit pdfs into the onenote pages as links to files. Due to the sheer volume of exhibits, as well as the ease of using tables, links were far more effective than inserting the files directly, and certainly more effective than inserting printouts.
With OneNote 2013, this mission-critical feature appears to be missing. I can only insert the file, or insert a printout. I don't want to do either- I want to insert a link. I know that I can insert links using the manual "insert link" function, but that is slower and more error prone than the simplicity of the previous versions. Am I missing a key option to trigger? Or is this a missing feature from OneNote 2013? If the latter, I suspect we will stick with 2010....

I agree. . .the original method of creating links by dragging/dropping was incredibly useful and needs to be re-instated. The work arounds and macros are not sufficient.

I strongly agree that this must be fixed. I have been "converting" people in my company to using OneNote, but this sort of inattention to a critical missing feature is very BAD.
This is one of the "best" features that a lot of people really, really like about using OneNote as an organizing tool. It was one of the first things I showed people about OneNote. AND NOW IT IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!!!
Please fix it now. I just installed OneNote 2013, and I'll probably have to go back to 2010 if this is not fixed.
What I don't understand is the line of thinking on this feature. I mean, did anyone complain that this feature existed? Did someone think this would somehow enhance the program's usability? What possible reason could there be for this feature to have been excised from the program?
It's great that people are coming up with workarounds, but this is something that never should have been needed. It was really a foolish design decision, and one that caused us to freeze the upgrade path at 2010. Since it seems we won't see this poor design decision undone, can we at least know why the team removed the ability to insert a file as a link?

But I think the reason for this "dumb design decision" stems from the MS marketing decision to massively promote the use of Skydrive.
And using local file links with (shared) notebooks on Skydrive isn't such a good idea ;-)
