"Insert link to file"- where did this go?

I'm an attorney, and I created a great litigation and trial-management system using only OneNote.  We put it to use in a large "mass action" case with over fifty plaintiffs and tens of thousands of exhibits.  The system allowed us to completely outmaneuver the plaintiffs at trial, and we were able to line up exhibits, deposition citations, and both direct and cross examination questions from a single program.   We all credit a great deal of our defense verdict to the system.

The key feature that let us build the various pages for trial quickly was the ability to drag and drop exhibit pdfs into the onenote pages as links to files.  Due to the sheer volume of exhibits, as well as the ease of using tables, links were far more effective than inserting the files directly, and certainly more effective than inserting printouts. 

With OneNote 2013, this mission-critical feature appears to be missing.  I can only insert the file, or insert a printout.  I don't want to do either- I want to insert a link.  I know that I can insert links using the manual "insert link" function, but that is slower and more error prone than the simplicity of the previous versions.  Am I missing a key option to trigger?  Or is this a missing feature from OneNote 2013?  If the latter, I suspect we will stick with 2010....

    I am a recent convert to OneNote 2011 having been introduced to it by a work colleague.  I find it very useful at keeping everything organised.

    Following that I started to use OneNote 2013 at home and installed it on my Android phone as well.

    I have wasted hours trying to find out why I couldn't drag and drop emails into my notes at home as I have been doing at work.  Then I discovered this forum and realised why!

    I thought that Microsoft was finally listening to customers and giving them what they want but it seems that they are still continuing to push what they think we should have.

    Has anyone found a workaround so that emails from Outlook or Mail can be dropped onto a page as an icon rather than pasting the contents onto the page?

    This is merely another irregularity Microsoft is notorious for doing. MS has done this since it's inception. Hell, they cannot even keep "network neighborhood,"network neighbors," or "network" consistent. That's dealing just with a name. 

    Have you ever attempted to understand MS licensing in the business place? Good luck. Microsoft's employees and licensing experts usually don't understand either and transfer you to the next employee who doesn't understand.

    Wow is this annoying.  I loved the fact that when searching 2013 no longer loses the search string like 2010 did. 

    I hate this lack of dropping links.

    I found two other workaround variants.

    If I use shift-right-click Copy as path I can paste those (either folders or files) as links and click through to them in OneNote 2013.  However if the file is on a mounted netshare it keeps the mount point which is bad for others.

    If I right drag a file or folder onto a new email message and say "create hyperlink here", outlook nicely undoes the mount point so it is a fully qualified netshare reference.  I can do that with as many files or folders as a want into one email message, then copy and paste those over to onenote.

    Of course that works.

    But MS thinks of people who are following their cloud hype and don't think about the consequences of local hyperlinks in that environment. 

    Another point is that Onenote development at the 1st version of Onenote (2003) didn't see the cloud coming.

    I think your point regarding OneDrive functionality is key.  Local hyperlinks do not function correctly in that environment, and they really want to push their cloud solution.  It's a shame they don't, and it seems like it would not be difficult to implement calls to locations on the local desktop even from within a notebook on OneNote.
