rendering the fonts in word 2013 is horrible!
Will Microsoft change it?
This is a similar problem like with Internet Explorer 9 & 10.

IE8 works good, Office 2010 also...

Check under File>Options>Advanced>Display and check the box for "Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen" and also try changing the setting for "Disable hardware graphics acceleration"
I figured it out right before reading your answer! Checking the option "use subpixel positioning..." also didn't work for me, but then i saw the "disable hardware graphics acceleration", checked it and finally worked! What a mess! Almost freaked out here, because i'm working on my term paper and it's impossible to imagine myself with a dysfunctional microsoft word at the moment!
Sadly, there is nothing you can do about the font rendering in IE 10 or Office 2013. For some reason that makes sense to only them (remember, this is the same company that got rid of the Start Button because they "claim" no one ever used it), MS changed their font rendering in their latest releases and fonts basically just look awful on a larger screen.
gdipp (http://code.google.com/p/gdipp/) normally improves this dramatically with it's own apple-like font smoothing algorithm, but at this point it does not work with IE 10 or Office 2013.
So basically if you want Office 2013 or IE 10 on a large monitor you are going to have awful looking pixelated fonts.

Thanks very much. I'll try some more. I did do the adjust truetype font prior. Can't find the subpixel thing - it's not on the advanced screen with disable hw graphics. And where would "optimizing character positioning" be? Your story gives me hope. I have a brand new Asus laptop, was really looking forward to new everything and it's been nothing but a headache so far. Outlook display horrors and synching form gmail since 2006 with no option to turn that off and 8 servcie calls and 4 weeks later, still can't use it. Thanks again
I'm using a 6 year old laptop that came with Vista and 3GB of RAM. I did a clean install of Win8 Pro and Office 2013 (local install). And, I'm running a second monitor.
I have no problem with blurry display in Office 2013.
FYI I do have "Optimize character positioning for Layout rather than readability" AND "Disable Hardware graphics acceleration" both **turned off.**I do have "Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen" **turned on.**And, I did use the Win8 "Adjust truetype fonts" tool.
I think that you have to find the combination of 3 options that works best for your system, and the truetype adjustment certainly didn't hurt.
