Word keeps randomly switching to draft view when I have track changes on.

I have this exact problem with Word 2010, Endnote x5 and a document with complex chapters, cross references and endnotes.

After reading this I tried this:

Endnote tab on ribbon.

Click on arrow at Bibliography bottom right

Instant Formatting tab

Settings...

Uncheck Scan for temporary citations

Seems to be working so far :)

I had to uncheck the whole "Enable instant formatting...." option for the bug to dissapear, it was not enough to uncheck the "temporary citations" option (Office 2010, Endnote X5)

We contacted EndNote and they told us that Instant Formatting needs to be disabled whenever tracking changes is enabled. So far it has been working for me, but I have not tried this while collaborating with other authors, which is when I first noticed the problem. 

Having Instant Formatting turned off is no problem. I just have to hit Update Citations and Bibliography to see the proper formatting applied to new citations.

Here are the instructions for disabling Instant Formatting:

"To disable Instant Formatting in the current document:

EndNote X1 and later:

1. Word 2002/2003/2004/2008/2011: From the Tools menu in Word, go to the EndNote submenu and select Format Bibliography or Bibliography Settings. 

Word 2007/2010: On the EndNote tab, in the Bibliography group, click the bottom corner arrow. 2. Click the Instant Formatting tab. 3. Click Turn Off to toggle Instant Formatting.  Click Cancel which will save changes to the Instant Formatting settings and not format the document.

Basically you can leave the instant formatting turned off until the very end when the document is in Final form NOT showing Markup. Then update the citations and bibliography. "

This exact same problem happens to me as well, it's an incredible nuisance. Print layout view is far superior to Draft view for reviewing tracked changes, because Print layout view plus balloons, displays more of the document than Draft view plus the reviewing panel.  Also, it is much easier to delete comments when they are in a balloon compared to when they are in the Reviewer panel.  It is such a nuisance, because when I switch it back to Print layout view, the doument jumps to the beginning of the document, and I end up losing track of where I'd got up to with reading the document.  It wastes so much time.  This is not becuase i've been idle, it happens even if i've recently made some changes to the document.  I also have a problem with the ballons sticking to the screen, so messageds like "Joe Blogs, 11/11/2011 3:26 p.m. commented: This is a great pargraph" will stick to the screen and obscure what i'm reading.  Eventually i have so many things stuck to the screen that i can't see my document, and have to close all Word files in order to get rid of the stuck messages (going to the desktop and clicking on "Refresh" does not correct this. I really hope that Microsoft can fix these two bugs!

In Word 2010, if I am editing a document with Track Changes on in Print Layout view, it will randomly switch to Draft view, opening the comments pane (instead of having comments bubbles in Print Layout view). This is an annoying bug since I prefer the arrangement of information in Print Layout view compared to Draft view. Is there a way to prevent this automatic switching while still having Track Changes on?

I have been having the same issue and can't seem to find a concrete resolution.  A few people in this forum say to change your cite while you write preferences to scan for temporary citations every 600 seconds and that way it will only switch every 10 minutes.  Haven't tried it so I don't know if it works or not.
