Unspecified Error, word/document.xml, Line:2, Column: 0

I have the same error as the original poster, and am honestly confused by all of this.  I had a document for work, inputted a company logo in the header and at the beginning of the doc, a table of contents, and then it is just text I typed.  I had saved a lot of times, did so one last time, closed it, remembered I wanted to do one other thing and reopened it, and then bam.  I want to keep it as I have it, but am not sure what to do as when I do a "save as", it rips out a lot of my formatting.  What do you have to do to recover it?  It will open in Google Docs, but it doesn't look right and has everything aligned right and then adds things to the next page.

Is there something I can do here, or an app I can use?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Ok, so I found a little info on finding exactly what the issue was with notepad++.  Here is the portion that it is having a problem with.  The website said just delete the line with an error, but since I'm using a Microsoft Schema, I'm not sure what to do.  When I delete line two out of there, it then has a bunch of problems at the end of the document, and wants all those errors resolved, to which I'm not sure what to do with.  Here is the error portion in question to begin with...

The way that I fixed it was to identify the line and hence the block of xml code that was causing the error, which I then cut from the document xml and pasted into a document so that I could more easily identify the actual text that was contained in that block of code.

With that section of xml cut from the original file, it could then be opened to reveal what was left of the equation.   Then I reconstructed the equation, using the text items that had been in the block of code (and making use of a basic knowledge of geometry)
